Skywalker OG is the lovechild of Skywalker and OG Kush. While some of these genetics can be traced back to their original landrace strains and countries of origin, the story of Skywalker OG is not as straightforward as one might think. The place of origin, genetics, and name all seem to be topics of debate among professionals in the cannabis industry.
The name OG is also a known area of controversy in the cannabis industry. There are two sides of the debate: OG stands for “Original Gangsta” as an homage to the rap group Cypress Hill. The other is that OG stands for “Ocean Grown”. While there is no arguing that it is an “OG”, the latter has become the more universally accepted meaning. Hindu Kush strains are known for having a specific flavor for being grown in the mountains. According to World of Weed, the cultivator gave it the name OG for it being ocean grown.
The History of Skywalker OG
The OG Kush side of Skywalker genetics are where things tend to get confusing. OG Kush being as sought after and famous as it is, has many mysterious and inconsistent stories of origin. Many people in the cannabis industry are confident that they know the truth about this powerhouse of a strain, yet nobody seems to have the same story. This is said for the place of origin as well as the parent strains of OG Kush. Some legends, including Leafly say that OG Kush was originally bred and cultivated in Florida and then brought to California by a man named Matt “Bubba” Berger. Bubba brought the genetics to legendary grower, Josh D who perfected the strain and brought it to its place of glory in the weed scene of the west coast. Cannabis Now claims that OG Kush was bred by a cultivator by the name of Plutz in California. Other sources claim that OG Kush came from a bag of different mixed seeds at a Grateful Dead concert in the 90s. No matter the place of origin, we’re all grateful to whoever bred OG Kush and gave it to the world.
Skywalker OG is known for its pungent aromatics of jet fuel that is often associated with Chemdawg as well as forest and earth. Its aftertaste has hints of pepper, hops, and spice. The two dominant terpenes are pinene and humulene which are responsible for Skywalker OG’s sedative properties as well as the scent of forest and beer. Caryophyllene and myrcene provide the peppery diesel aromatics. There is little to no fruity undertones to this strain, so the flavor isn’t for everybody, but trust us when we say that these earthy and pungent flavors work to create something magnificent. Give Skywalker OG a sniff the next time you’re in a Buddy Boy dispensary and see what it smells like to you.
The parent strain, Skywalker was originally bred by Dutch Passion Seed Company in Amsterdam. The cross of Mazar flower and Blueberry pollen produced the indica dominant strain that offered low potency around 15% THC. Despite the below average THC content, it produces a robust yield making it a strong choice for breeding. Unfortunately, Skywalker has since been discontinued by Dutch Passion Seed Company. Lucky for us, Skywalker genetics have become deeply rooted in the modern cannabis industry and are fairly easy to find.
