The area is very popular with walkers and there are some stunning walks through the countyside and mountains to the south.

The River Gorgos, also known further upstream as the Jallon, dry in summer, and a raging torrent after winter rains, has formed a deep gorge and a tourist attraction.

All these products can be seen in and outside many of shops in the main street and throughout the town.

Gata de Gorgos was the destination of the Lemon Express tourist train

The “Lemon Express” (Limón Express) tourist train ran on the FGV line between Alicante and Denia. Reported to be a fabulous train ride experience, through beautiful rugged countryside.

The town, Gata, is renowned for

You can still take the same spectacular journey on the modern tram through the mountains., so jump on a tram for either Benidorm to either Gata de Gorges or go a little further to Denia for a day out. The trams offer an hourly service.

Lemon express
It used to run from Benidorm station up past Calpe leaving around 10 am and was a super half day trip
Went on it many times in the ’70s when it was one of those ‘must do’ excursions. The train went through the lemon groves to Gata where there was time to explore the small town and a tour of the guitar factory. What I don’t remember much about was the return journeys when large quantanties of free cava flowed and a party atmosphere soon took over with holiday company reps encouraging sing songs and dancing in the aisles. happy times:)
I lost 24 hrs of my life after a trip on The Lemon Express in 1981!!
Stopped it years ago
There was a local news report last week of yet another push to have the attraction restored but I somehow doubt that it ever will.
Did it in 1997. Little realising how such a sedate trip to see a Guitar factory in Gata de Gorgos could descend into such a wild ride on the return. Hilarious and good fun too. You could see the old Limon Express carriages by the side of the autovia on the way towards Benidorm last time I went.
Does anyone know what happened to the Lemon Express trip .
nothing much to do with looking at lemons on the way back ,, free cava all the way , dancing in the carriages ,,great ride
